DID YOU KNOW

A paraprosdokian is a phrase or sentence that leads us down the garden path to an unexpected ending.  Winston Churchill loved them.

1. "Where there's a will, I want to be in it," is a paraprosdokian.

2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.

3. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

8. Evening news is where they begin with 'Good Evening,' and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

9. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism.  To steal from many is research.

10. A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a workstation.

11. I thought I wanted a career.  Turns out I just wanted paychecks.

12. Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says, 'In case of emergency, notify:' I put 'DOCTOR.'

13. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

14. A clear conscience is the sign of a fuzzy memory.

15. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

16. Money can't buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with.

17. There's a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they can't get away.

18. I used to be indecisive.  Now I'm not so sure.

19. You're never too old to learn something stupid.

20. To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

21. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

22. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

23. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

24. Where there's a will, there are relatives.

MAYHUE'S MUSINGS

The church is like a bicycle!

I remember the days when our children attempted to ride their bicycles for the first time.  They had the usual training wheels attached to the back axel, but the day came when they would have to ride without the support of those two smaller wheels.  My kids quickly learned that balancing a bike was not as easy as it appeared.  While ‘moving forward’ was a secret to keeping balance, the action of ‘moving forward’ brought some fear and a few screams.  The church is much like a bicycle.  Unless we are ‘moving forward’ it can be nearly impossible to keep balanced.  Forward motion is necessary!

We have a growing sense at Mission Christian Church that we are ‘moving forward.’  We continue to ‘see’ the growth in our attendance and our financial strength is improving.  It is especially encouraging to see the number of volunteers who are expressing their willingness to serve.  While the growth in different areas becomes more and more apparent, we can also sense that our ‘balance’ is growing as well.  Not only are we growing in numbers, we are also growing in the Word as well.  Yes, the church is a lot like a bicycle!  Forward motion is so helpful to remain balanced.

We will continue to search for more volunteers (servants) for the different ministries that we have at Mission Christian.  Consider ‘moving forward’ in your spiritual walk with the Lord and find a place to serve in one of our many ministries.  Your ‘ride’ into service will not only help you find meaning, it will also help you maintain a spiritual balance.  You can find a Ministry Information Booklet at the entrance to the Sanctuary.  Our ministries are ideas of areas to serve, and who knows, you might be able to help us better organize and develop our ministries.  A two-seat bike can be better than one!

Paul wrote, “I press on towards the goal…” (Phil. 3:14) and he knew the importance of ‘forward progress.’  Our theme for February will be “Moving Forward,” and we will be exploring ways in which we can continue to grow and maintain our balance.  The ‘ride forward’ comes with some risks and an element of fear.  We have no training wheels and our Father has given us a gentle push forward.  I can still see the look of excitement on my kids’ faces.  We should have the same!  May the Lord bless our work together!

NEWS AND NOTES

Philippine Typhoon Relief Fund

The former mission of John and Sandy Mayhue was recently hit by a major typhoon.  They were missionaries to Cagayan de Oro for about fourteen years.  The city saw about 250,00 people displaced and the church the Mayhues established was affected.  The congregation of over 400 saw about 20 families (about 100 members) lose their homes.  The minister and two elders lost their homes.  One family of four perished (John Flores family).  The church building sustained damage and lost all equipment.  A relief fund has been established and if you like to donate to this fund please make your checks out to Mission Christian Church and note for Phil. Typhoon Relief Fund. Fund goal is $5,000.00.
